THE RETINA
The retina is a layer of tissue in the back of your eye that senses light and sends images to your brain.
In the centre of this nerve tissue is the macula. It provides the sharp, central vision needed for reading, driving and seeing fine detail.
Retinal disorders affect this vital tissue. They can affect your vision, and some can be serious enough to cause blindness.
Some examples include:
- Macular degeneration – a disease that destroys your sharp, central vision. You can download our patient leaflet on macula degeneration here
- Diabetic eye disease (click for more information)
- Retinal detachment – a medical emergency, when the retina is pulled away from the back of the eye
- Flashing Lights and floaters cobwebs or specks in your field of vision accompanied by flashing lights You can download our patient leaflet on flashing lights and floaters here
- Blood vessel occlusions – blockages in blood vessels which carry blood to and away from the retina causing sudden loss or blurred vision
By no means is this list exhaustive, and there are many conditions which can affect the retina.
If you have any concerns the optometrist can investigate the back of the eye by dilating the pupils and examining with special equipment.
